This style of bag has proved popular at both my Upcycled Jacket workshop and Sewing Skills workshop. Big enough for day-to-day essentials, and can be worn across the body. Making it ideal for those of us who like to keep their hands free for rummaging in charity shops and those of you with small people to hold on to.
Janine made this denim version with applique (and machine embroidered) butterfly and button detail, at my Sewing Skills workshop.
The flap top can be closed in various ways:
The addition of a button-hole tab and button – upcycled from a wool jacket and cord trousers.
A leaf and bead dangle to wrap around a button – my current handbag
A ribbon or cord loop and button -Ikea fabric remnant & recycled shirt (Janine’s bag, above, has this closure too)
You could also have a button closure along the top of the bag.
My design has evolved as I have made more of theses bags, the fold over flap has grown and the closures varied.
Would you like to know how to make this bag?
Look out for the instructions – next weekend.
There will be basic instructions for those who sew and a full guide for beginners too.
