Are you ready to give up fast fashion?

Are you giving anything up for lent? I did consider Labour Behind the Label‘s invitation for a ‘fashion fast to appose fast fashion’ by wearing only 6 items from my wardrobe for a whole 6 weeks.  The trouble is that there are more than 6 items I want to be wearing during the next 6 weeks.  How about you?

How would you manage for 6 weeks with only 6 items of clothing?  Even though this doesn’t include underwear and outerwear and my Pilates kit, I don’t want to manage on just 6 items.

Jen of Make do and Mend has gone for the 6 items challenge whole heartedly.  I really admire her for it.  You can read about her experience  on her blog, and even sponsor her in support of Labour Behind the Label.  “Labour Behind the Label supports garment workers’ efforts worldwide to improve their working conditions, through awareness raising, information provision and encouraging international solidarity between workers and consumers.”

Labour Behind the Label featured on ITV’s Exposure programme  on 6th February 2014 at 10.35pm (available on ITV player for just a few more hours!).  This worrying programme showed that despite the laws to protect workers in Bangladesh, they are still exploited.  Labour Behind the Label asks us to challenge this, not by boycotting anyone, as this can lead to problems for the workers, but by being more aware of what is going on and challenging our own demand for a constantly changing supply of cheap clothes.

Having sat and written this, I feel rather selfish for not trying the challenge, so although I’m a bit late to the party, I’m off to look in my wardrobe and work out how I can do this!  Watch out for another blog post very soon!
